Associate Professor in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), where he also serves as Academic Head of Internal Medicine. He holds dual certifications in Pulmonology and Critical Care. His research focuses on inflammatory airway diseases, including asthma and COPD, pulmonary hypertension, and tuberculosis. Prof. Kalla is the Southern African Representative on the Middle East Africa Asthma Steering Committee and is involved in multiple international COVID-19 trials, including WHO Solidarity and REMAP-CAP. His major research interest is in the inflammatory pathways of asthma, for which he completed his PhD.
